Managed Print for Duerrs, Manchester
Duerrs is a family-owned jam and peanut butter manufacturer based near Manchester. Running since 1881, the site employs somewhere in the region of 200 to 300 people.
The challenge
Handling the printer legacy
We were introduced to Duerrs by their IT company, who had flagged up the printing problem.
Printing and consumables had simply got out of hand.
Across the business there were around 70 individual desktop inkjet printers, covering roughly 40 different models – each needing its own cartridges, its own print driver, its own login.
Every department bought its own ink, so nobody could see the total spend in one place.
And, the staff were losing time to printer problems and access.
what we did
The Consolidation Plan
We started by interviewing staff across the site to find out who was printing what, and why.
As a working food factory with allergen-controlled zones our audit had to take into account more than a typical office space.
We were able to consolidate the printer fleet down to roughly four or five device models and around a 50% reduction in devices across the site.
We took over all toner and ink supply and provided a small central repository of consumables – nothing like the volume they had to carry before.
We also rolled out print release software on a number of the machines, so printing could be authenticated and tracked.
Outcome
What was the result?
The process saved Duerrs tens of thousands of pounds a year and gave them considerably better, fully managed equipment.
They’re now on their third or fourth hardware refresh and thanks to the print-tracking software PaperCut, we are able to accurately review what they need.
When Duerrs opens new manufacturing lines, we are able to specify the right setup from day one so they have a smooth launch.
Smooth running from day-to-day
Most of the day-to-day management happens without Duerrs even needing to think about it.
Errors are monitored remotely, so we can pre-empt any problems.
But if there are any problems, we are there in a heartbeat to fix it.
